Back in June, my good friend John finished up his stint as a Peace Corps Volunteer in East Java, Indonesia. I had visited John in December 2012, and he returned the favor by coming through Kazakhstan on his way home. He was so committed he spent a week in Kuala Lumpur again getting his Kazakhstan tourism visa, which knocked my socks off considering I never thought anyone would actually visit me here.
The week he came was a busy time for me because I was teaching two intensive courses during the summer semester, but we were able to escape the city for a long weekend out at Kolsai Lakes with some of my awesome friends here. The second night we camped on the shores of the second lake, and it was the night of the “Super Moon,” which meant we had some fun and animal spirits were high. I like these photos too much not to share, and I hope you enjoy them too.
And, once again, thanks for coming out John! Eating shashlik at The Pit is not the same without you.

We did not make it up to Lake 3, but the natural alpine lakes we saw at one and two were fantastic. This is a great spot to visit if you can stand the rough dirt road for 4+ hours to get there.

This was John’s last weekend here, as well as Diana and Elizabeth’s, before all of them headed back to the USA. It was a great way to spend it with fantastic company in a wonderful place under a super moon.
